Where does one start when trying to describe a Jack Nicklaus hidden gem? Let’s start with what Jack is famous for in our opinion. “Big”.
 
Champions Club is “Big”. Big fairways, big greens, big bunkers, big clubhouse, big drives necessary , big uphill carries, big water , big views, big valleys, big cactus , big patio, big food but sad to say “Big Scores” if you do not play the proper set of tees for your skill level.
Our recommendation : choose the club you would normally hit that distance and then add at least one and maybe 2 more especially on the uphill shots.
Champions is a wonderful place located at The Retreat, an excellent gated community nestled in the hills at Corona, California.
 
Doug Hoffert PGA is the outstanding Director of Golf at Champions Club charged with the responsibility of making sure each and every patron enjoys their time with him and his staff when they visit. These folks do not disappoint!!
 
The Golf Destination Review team was duly impressed not only with Mr. Nicklaus’s special creation but also with the outstanding level of service provided by Doug and his staff. The economy in this part of California is currently in dire straits but somehow Doug and the owners of this special place are managing to make it all work just fine. They have put the emphasis where it needs to be in order to ensure the health of this operation. That emphasis is on making sure your visit to The Champions is “World Class” in every respect!
 
The GDR team found that not only is the clubhouse stunning in design and detail with layered shale rock pillars and walls and outstanding décor but the same care has been carried out to the golf course . We noted excellent conditioning, well groomed bunkers and tour conditions just as one would expect with a top notch Nicklaus layout.
 
What we didn’t expect was the shockingly low price one pays to experience this facility . In many places we visit in North America, to play a course this superb, one would add at least a $100 bill in front of what they charge you here. For around $50 or less you get to experience this Jack Nicklaus masterpiece including golf cart and all the other goodies that come with it. Downright unbelievable!!
 
Our time spent with Doug Hoffert and his staff and with Mr. Nicklaus’s Champions Club was memorable for all the right reasons.
 
You owe it to yourself to make a trip to Corona California if only to play this one golf course.
