Black Lake extends a dream of Walter Reuther, the legendary leader of the UAW, who longed for a retreat where union members and their families could combine union education with relaxation and recreation. Reuther and his wife were killed when their plane crashed not far from Black Lake while inspecting the 1,000 acre site.

Expanding on Reuther's dream the UAW added a championship golf course. The goal was to take advantage of the spectacular property, and add a top-of-the-line, environmentally responsible, course for UAW members, their families, retirees, guests, and the general public.

Rees Jones, the nationally respected architect, handled all design work. Jones has become known as "The U.S. Open doctor" for his restoration of classic layouts selected by the USGA for U.S. Open sites. Jones has brought some of that classic "feel" to Black Lake. It's greens are located largely on plateaus, with bunkers recessed into the faces, giving the course an old-fashioned northeastern look.

Jones utilized all of the property's features -- from cranberry bogs to a small sand quarry -- to produce what may be his most charming design yet. "We were trying to build an old-style, classic course," Jones said. "You'll notice we don't have mounds or moguls - only sweeps and natural grade. We strive for holes blending with the natural terrain. There is nothing artificial or contrived."

Jones designed a par 72 course, which plays over 7,000 yards from the tips to over 5,000 yards from the forward trees. Very user friendly for all players.  Black Lake Golf Club is a wonderful championship design that will afford UAW members, guests, and public golfers of all abilities an enjoyable round of golf.
